East Bengal beat Salgaocar 1-0 in I League
Wednesday, December 22, 2010
East Bengal beat Salcaocar by a solitary goal to clinch their fifth consecutive win in the fifth round match of the I-League played today afternoon at Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata.
Tolgey Ozbey (60') scored the winner for Red & Golds.
It was an entertaining afternoon of action with the biggest crowd for an I-League game at Salt Lake Stadium this season and both the teams started with attacking flair to maintain their top postion in the I League table.
East Bengal could have won by a bigger margin but Robin, Penn & Budhiram missed easy chances and a power packed long ranger of Mehtab Hossain was brilliantly saved by Salgaocar goalkeeper Karanjit Singh in early first half.
The match went into the lemon break with 0-0 scoreline.
Soon after the start of second half the red & golds were in good rhythm and started to dominate the game. They showed more urgency to break the deadlock and continued to attack the Salgaocar citadel with flurry of attacks in search of the elusive goal.
In the 58th minute Penn almost scored off a Sanju Pradhan chip but his lob over the goalkeeper sailed over the horizontal. Two minutes later Mehtab passed to Robin on the right inside box who squared it to Tolgay and the Australian made no mistake in slotting it home with a powerful shot.
The celebrations followed, and today’s theme was ‘rocking the baby’ in honour of Mehtab becoming father of a baby boy two days ago.
Uga Okpara & Sunil Kumar played a steller role in the defence and prevented Salgaocar from making any dent towards the East Bengal goal.
East Bengal juggernaut continues to roll on and they recorded their fifth straight win in the ongoing I-League and dislodged Salgaocar from the leader’s spot to climb on the top of the table.
Uga Okpara of East Bengal was adjudged Man of the Match.
East Bengal now tops the I League table with 15 points from five outings.
