The 1984 European Grand Prix was the first Formula 1 race held on the new Nürburgring. The older and much longer North loop track was built in the 1920s around the medieval castle of Nürburg. The old track was nicknamed "The Green Hell" by Jackie Stewart and was widely considered the most demanding purpose-built racing circuit in the world. Because of it's length (14 miles) and the lack of space due to its situation on the sides of the mountains, the Ring was unable to meet ever-increasing safety requirements.

A week before the 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, Niki Lauda tried to organize a boycott of the circuit because it was too dangerous, but most of the other drivers voted against a boycott and the race went ahead. Ironically on just the second lap, Lauda's Ferrari swerved off the track, hit an embankment and burst into flames. Lauda was trapped in the wreckage. Before fellow drivers (not track marshals) could pull him from the car, he suffered severe burns to his head and inhaled hot toxic gases that damaged his lungs.

This crash marked the end of the old Nürburgring for Formula One. It never hosted another F1 race again as the German Grand Prix was moved to the Hockenheimring for 1977.
