JETS (19-14-5) at CANADIENS (14-18-7)

Last 10: Winnipeg 6-3-1; Montreal 3-7-0.

Team Scope:

Jets: The Jets aim to match a season-high four-game winning streak as they kick off 2012 with a four-game road trip. In fact, they will play 15 of their next 21 away from home as they look for the same success on the road that they’ve had at the noisy MTS Centre. Winnipeg skated to an excellent 9-2-1 home record in December -- playing all but two of their 14 games on home ice -- and has one of the best home records in the League at 14-6-1. However, the Jets are just 5-8-4 as the visitors and will have to adjust to life on the road, having not played back-to-back road games since Nov. 25-26.

"We really played well through the month, and we have to carry that through," coach Claude Noel told NHL.com. "We're playing with some real passion, and we're doing some really good things. I don't see it changing on the road. Maybe there's a little difference in battle level, but all in all we've done good."

Canadiens: Coming off a 1-5-0 road trip and mired in the bottom five teams of the League with just 35 points, the Canadiens' frustrations boiled over during Monday's practice. Plekanec, the team's leading scorer, and defenseman P.K. Subban dropped the gloves and had a brief scrap after a 1-on-1 drill in front of the net. No big punches were landed and neither player was hurt before the scuffle was broken up by Josh Gorges, who signed a six-year contract extension a day earlier.

"It's nothing personal between me and P.K., it's about the team and to realize we have to start playing as a team," Plekanec said. "That's what happens during the course of the year when things are not going well. I wouldn't say it's a frustration thing, it's just that we realize we need to be better."

Subban shared a similar sentiment.

"We’re going through a rough stretch and sometimes that’s what happens," said Subban, who hopes the team could use the incident as a spark as it plays six of its next seven at home. "It happened last year a few times and I think we ended up coming out of it a better team. If you saw, afterwards everyone in practice started picking it up a little so sometimes that feistiness is a good thing."

Monday morning was already intriguing for the Habs, as general manager Pierre Gauthier addressed the media to give a mid-season assessment, during which he issued a qualified apology for hiring a non-French speaking coach in Randy Cunneyworth.

"I'm sorry if we upset people. Because that certainly wasn't our intention," Gauthier said. "What will happen in the future, at the end of the season, is that we will re-evaluate the whole file."

Who's Hot: Wheeler has a five-game point-streak, posting 3 goals and 4 assists in that stretch. … Montreal forward Erik Cole has scored a goal in each of his last three games.

Injury Report: Dustin Byfuglien (knee) has missed the last three games, while Bryan Little (foot), Randy Jones (upper body) and Derek Meech (lower body) remain sidelined for Winnipeg. Forward Jim Slater (rib) has sat out the last two games but could return on Wednesday. … Montreal defenseman Andrei Markov (knee) and forwards Brian Gionta (lower body) and Scott Gomez (groin) are on injured reserve. Gionta did skate with the team Tuesday morning for the first time since he was injured on Dec. 8.

Stat Pack: Cole scored in the final minute of Montreal's loss to the Panthers on Saturday, his 200th career goal and his 19th against the Panthers -- the most he has against any team except Washington. … Winnipeg is in the top five in the League in first-period scoring with 40 of its 103 goals coming in the opening period.

Puck Drop: Teammates coming to blows is generally not too big of a deal in sports, as it happens from time to time. The Canadiens seemed to have already shrugged it off and Subban was joking about it afterwards.

BRUINS (24-10-1) at DEVILS (21-15-2)

Last 10: Boston 7-3-0; New Jersey 7-2-1.

Team Scope:

Bruins: Already owners of the NHL's longest winning streak this season at 10 games, Boston was bidding for an eighth consecutive victory last Saturday to close out a memorable 2011. The Stars weren't interested in adding to the Bruins' nostalgia, however, and used a three-goal first period to deal their visitors a 4-2 loss. Tyler Seguin and Milan Lucic scored, but Boston found itself shorthanded six times in the first 40 minutes and yielded a pair of power-play goals.

"They played well and you have to give them credit," captain Zdeno Chara said in the Boston Herald. "But we didn't play our game. Credit to them, but we need to be better for 60 minutes. We played pretty good for 20, 30 (minutes) at the most, but that's not good enough to win a game."

Devils: Third periods and shorthanded goals have provided New Jersey with its share of struggles at times this season, and the two combined again to spell disaster Monday in Ottawa. The Devils were trying to add to a 2-1 lead in the final seconds of a power play when Filip Kuba collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and sent Erik Condra in for a shot that ticked off the stick of defenseman Matt Taormina and past Martin Brodeur for the tying goal. A penalty to David Clarkson in overtime led to Daniel Alfredsson's power-play goal and a 3-2 defeat.

"We had them down," Clarkson, who scored for the Devils along with Dainius Zubrus, said in the Newark Star-Ledger. "Ottawa's a good team. They skate well. They do a lot of good things. We need to have a bit of a better third, but the bottom line is that penalty at the end cost us. I've got to be smarter than that. That's a tough loss."

Who's Hot: David Krejci has 2 goals and 4 assists during a five-game points streak for the Bruins. Dennis Seidenberg has 2 goals and 2 assists during a three-game points streak. Lucic has 3 goals in the last four games. … Clarkson has 3 goals in the last four games and leads the Devils with 14 for the season.

Injury Report: New Jersey defenseman Anton Volchenkov could return to the lineup after missing Monday's game against his former team with a lower-body injury. Forward Jacob Josefson is skating with the team again and getting closer to returning from a broken collarbone. Defenseman Andy Greene is still recovering from a broken toe.

Stat Pack: Prior to yielding the two power-play goals to the Stars, the Bruins had killed off 39 of their previous 40 shorthanded situations. … Zubrus scored the 200th goal of his career against the Senators and linemate Petr Sykora picked up an assist for his 699th point.

Puck Drop: New Jersey has scored 18 power-play goals this season (13.3-percent efficiency, 27th in the NHL) and given up a League-high 12 shorthanded goals, more than double the total of any other team. Boston, by contrast, has the 11th-best power play at 18.9 percent and is the only NHL team not to have allowed a shorthanded goal this season.

WILD (21-13-6) at CANUCKS (24-13-3)

Last 10: Minnesota 1-6-3; Vancouver 6-3-1.

Team Scope:

Wild: The Wild have lost nine of their last ten games overall, and enter a difficult stretch beginning Wednesday at Vancouver that sees them play six of their next seven games away from Xcel Energy Center. After an important divisional victory over the Edmonton Oilers last Thursday to snap an eight-game winless skid, the Wild allowed three unanswered goals to lose the momentum on home ice Saturday against the Coyotes.

Matt Cullen's conversion on a third period penalty shot gave Minnesota a jolt of positive energy, but a late empty-netter by Phoenix’ Ray Whitney sealed another excruciating loss for the Wild.

"Emotional or not, we have to come to the rink and be ready to go and play a certain way," coach Mike Yeo told the Associated Press. "We don't have a choice. We're not going to go in and just drop our sticks and win hockey games."

Canucks: After outscoring its opponents 27-15 during a stretch of six wins in seven games, Vancouver has taken a step back with only three goals in consecutive losses to the Kings and Sharks. The Canucks sport the League's best power-play conversion percentage (23.9), but are only two for their last 21 on the man advantage in their last six games.

Luongo did his part on Monday at Rogers Arena, stopping 33 of 35 shots to help the Canucks earn a point, but San Jose blanked Vancouver in the shootout to hand Alain Vigneault's team consecutive losses for the first time since mid-December.

"We weren't good enough," Henrik Sedin told the AP. "We got our chance on the power play, but we weren't sharp enough and didn't create enough chances to score. They played well. But still, I thought we had chances to maybe get a few more shots to the net and we were passing up opportunities to shoot."

Who’s Hot: Pierre-Marc Bouchard, who scored in the second period of Minnesota's loss to Phoenix on New Year's Eve, has tallied three goals in his last four games. … Daniel Sedin, despite seeing his four-game point streak come to an end against the Sharks, has recorded four goals and an assist with a plus-4 rating in his last five games.

Injury Report: Minnesota has activated Devin Setoguchi (lower body) off injured reserve, as the forward will likely be available Wednesday in Vancouver. Casey Wellman (upper body) was also activated off IR for the Wild. Guillaume Latendresse (concussion) and Jarod Palmer (upper body) remain on IR and are expected to miss the game for Minnesota, while Clayton Stoner (groin) made the trip to Vancouver and could be available for the Wild this week. … David Booth (knee) and Aaron Rome (broken thumb) are on IR and will miss Wednesday's game for the Canucks.

Stat Pack: Cody Hodgson notched a goal and an assist in Monday's shootout loss to San Jose, extending his home point streak to six games. Hodgson has put together the longest point streak in home games by a Vancouver rookie since Dixon Ward had a stretch of six straight games with at least a point in November of 1992.

Puck Drop: "Our execution may be a tad off and when you're a tad off, with the quality of goaltending and quality of penalty killing in this League is challenging," Vigneault said.

SHARKS (20-11-4) at DUCKS (10-21-6)

Last 10: San Jose 5-2-3; Anaheim 2-7-1.

Team Scope:

Sharks: After losing their first two meetings with Vancouver by excruciatingly tight margins – and the whole Western Conference Final encounter – San Jose finally got the best of the Canucks on Monday. Michal Handzus scored the winner on the third penalty shot, and Antti Niemi made 27 saves as the Sharks snapped a 0-2-2 road skid. The Sharks now have points in eight of nine and are gradually gearing up for another playoff run.

"We keep talking about how one play, whether it's early in the first (period) or late in the third," said defenseman Dan Boyle said. "One play could be the difference-maker and tonight we had to take it to a shootout to get a winner.

"It's a start. The West is so tight, every point counts so getting that extra point was big for us."

Ducks: Anaheim is currently exhibiting the rare and crippling combination of slow starts and impotent special teams. The Ducks haven’t scored a power-play goal in four games, and chalked up early deficits in recent games against Vancouver and Colorado. Two days after Vancouver grabbed a 4-0 lead against the Ducks, Anaheim was down 3-0 after 30 minutes against Colorado.

"It's never fun when you lose at all and it seems like we've been doing a lot of losing lately," said Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler. "You can't even really describe it. It's a terrible feeling. You feel like you're letting the fans down, the team down and the coaching staff. I think we're all just searching for an answer right now. It's tough."

Who's Hot: Anaheim's Bobby Ryan has scored a goal in three straight games.

Injury Report: San Jose's Colin White (lower body), Martin Havlat (left hamstring surgery), Jim Vandermeer (upper body) and Alex Stalock (knee surgery) will miss significant time and are on injured reserve. … Devante Smith-Pelly fractured his left foot while playing for Canada in the World Junior Championship and will miss 4-6 weeks. Jason Blake (left wrist surgery) and Matt Smaby (right thumb surgery) are both on IR.

Stat Pack: Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller has gone 5-0-0 with a 1.71 goals-against average with two shutouts in his last six appearances against San Jose, but he has lost five of six overall. Niemi is 3-4-0 lifetime against Anaheim, but he's won five of his last seven starts.

Puck Drop: "They have good players. Their record may not show it but they are pretty dynamic." – Sharks center Joe Pavelski on Anaheim

Otro año más en transición....:cry::cry:
