On November 7, 1991, Earvin "Magic" Johnson made people stop and watch. The 32-year-old ground-breaking point guard was holding a press conference to make the stunning announcement that he was HIV-positive and would be retiring from basketball immediately. The shock of this declaration went deeper. Having the AIDS virus in 1991 was widely seen as a death sentence, and the commonly held belief was that we would be watching a beloved sports hero die excruciatingly and swiftly in front of our eyes. Yet Magic had a different narrative in mind. He defied the odds, not just surviving, but truly living and prospering. This film gets to the core of this incredible personal journey and explores how Magic continues to thrive two decades later.

El 7 de noviembre del 1991, el legendario jugador de Los Ángeles Lakers Earvin 'Magic' Johnson sorprendió al mundo anunciando que se retiraría de forma inmediata de la NBA debido a que había sido diagnosticado como portador del VIH. Aunque sólo era portador del virus y no había desarrollado SIDA, en aquellos años, la mera mención del VIH se entendía como una sentencia de muerte segura. Además, aún existían muchos prejuicios, ya que era considerada como una enfermedad que padecían sólo homosexuales y drogadictos y no se conocía exactamente ni su origen, ni la forma de contagio ni cómo se podía controlar el avance de la enfermedad, convirtiendo a los pacientes en estigmatizados sociales.

Este reportaje, dirigido por Nelson George, evalúa el impacto que la declaración de 'Magic' tuvo para humanizar esta pandemia mundial, enseñando que cualquiera podía ser portador del virus, independientemente de su condición sexual o social, y que se podía vivir con esa enfermedad.
